I think that one of the most fun of all projects because it takes so much planning and research for each home is different, grass, soil, sunlight, grass type and what to use seed or sod. There are so many ways to approach doing the job so make certain you have done all your homework. Check soil by removing a 8X8 inch square and take on the look at the roots. If there are little to no roots then that may be your problem. Grass needs to be able to establish at least a 2-3 inch root base and it should be uniform if not that may be the problem . I would like to share on type dormant seeding. Yes you can seed in the winter. The seed we are using is Scott Brand. Will discuss seed in this post soon. It’s essential you do your research and ask the local farm store and call and visit the internet and see what see grows best in your region. Also what type of lawn seed you would like to have. Seeding and Sod

Seeding and Sod
It may be Winter, spring, summer or fall but that should not stop you from getting your lawn ready for a thick rich lawn. Soil preparation is critical. Making sure you read the label on the bag of seed. Keeping all your receipts just in case you do everything perfect and have to over seed with a different seed. I suggest talking to your local farm store and doing tons of research on the internet. I use YouTube and many other sites such as my weather reports, Farmers Almanac, the department of Agriculture and other pros in growing and seeing as well as cutting maintaining, aeration, mowing, fertilization, watering and shade vs sunny areas. The area you live on also matters. Rainfall and tall vs smaller fescue grasses. Please leave you comments on what tips you can share.
